More about Shane

Shane brings more than 25 years of experience in the food safety and quality arena, both locally and internationally, with a background as a food laboratory microbiologist, national food safety manager, food quality consultant, trainer and regulatory auditor.

During his career Shane has worked for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), its successor AgriQuality, and Woolworths New Zealand Ltd.

He is a professional member of the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology (NZIFST), a member of the Inspection Body Professional Advisory Committee for International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ), and a technical expert for IANZ in the fields of Food Safety Programme Auditing, and Microbiology (Dairy, Meat, Food and Water testing).

In his role as a regulatory auditor, Shane has developed a strong reputation for a technically robust, business appropriate auditing style, that adds value to businesses. He has been a Director of Assured Audits for more than 18 years, and has widespread industry networks across New Zealand.

Through his consultancy company Assured Food Safety Ltd, Shane has developed more than 50 food safety management systems (Food Safety Programmes/Risk Management Programmes) that have been registered with the Ministry for Primary Industries (formerly MAF/NZFSA), and as such has a detailed understanding of practical approaches to compliance that meet regulatory requirements, and that actually work.

One of Shane's other passions is as a coach, facilitator and trainer, and he has developed and presented a large number of customised food safety related training courses and workshops, to many food businesses – including those in horticulture, primary and secondary food processing, foodservice and retail.

In addition to working locally Shane contracted to the Food and Agriculture Organization (the UN Food Agency) from 2008 - 2012, as an International Consultant on Food Hygiene, HACCP and Good Manufacturing Practices. During that time he has provided training and consultancy services in Laos, Cambodia and Tanzania.  More recently he has been involved in developing and presenting Food Labelling and Shelf Life, Good Hygienic Practices (Foodservice Sector) and Good Manufacturing Practices training workshops with the Mekong Institute (Thailand) under the New Zealand Aid funded Prosafe Programme.
