The Food Safety Information Council (FSIC) recently released new advice on reusable food containers and food safety.
FSIC note that it is important to consider appropriate use of reusable food containers as they become more accepted by food retailers. Current advice includes:
- ensuring suitable containers are being selected, including not reusing containers designed for single-use
- ensuring containers are cleaned thoroughly between uses
- considering individual retailers' policies on types of containers accepted i.e. some retailers don’t use glass or ceramic for safety reasons
- not using plastic containers after they show signs of damage.
